8 assessed work items are mapped below. Use the lesson title or activity ID to find the work, the evidence to keep, and the criteria used to assess it.

Suggested learner fit

Education catalog title: Shaping Your Sound with Multitrack Recording — Recording Elective

About 15–18 after a basic recording project.

Priority skills: Track preparation; overdubbing; session integrity; recoverable handoff.

Prior skills: Can record and reopen one track and identify the original audio files.

Equipment: DAW, headphones, supplied multitrack session; interface and microphone for capture work.

Expected time: Plan 8–12 hours for eight lessons and labs.

Teacher guidance: Teacher recommended; witnessed capture is required when that skill is assessed.

1. Plan the performance and track layout

1.4.b · ISTE Standards for Students
Plan within project limits

Assignment

Write an arrangement brief and an overdub order for a short song section. Create a source/input/route/destination list. Identify one guide part and one later part that depends on it. Reserve recovery versions and decide which sources must stay independent.

Evidence to keep

Keep the plan in a digital document. Include the intended result, resources, timing and a response to one likely change.

2. Understand the recorder and monitoring modes

1.1.d · ISTE Standards for Students
Operate and explain technology

Assignment

Download shaping-recording-practice.apstudio from the course overview. In apStudio choose SESSION / FILES → Open and select that file. Confirm Drums take 1 uses Bus 1–2 and Bass overdub uses Bus 3. Their initial destination timelines are empty; the prerecorded source excerpts are in the buses. Identify a prerecorded source bus and the separate physical-input option. Explain the difference between input, arm, transport Record and monitoring.

Evidence to keep

Demonstrate the operation yourself where equipment is available. Identify the controls used and verify the result; keep proposed operations separate from completed demonstrations.

3. Set record gain and performer monitoring

1.1.d · ISTE Standards for Students
Operate and explain technology

Assignment

Select the intended destination input and leave unrelated tracks disarmed. Play a known strong source passage and identify recording versus playback meters. Adjust listening level without assuming it changes record gain. For physical work, capture and replay a short test before committing to a take.

Evidence to keep

Demonstrate the operation yourself where equipment is available. Identify the controls used and verify the result; keep proposed operations separate from completed demonstrations.

4. Record and keep the foundation

1.1.d · ISTE Standards for Students
Operate and explain technology

Assignment

Choose a short supplied bus interval and an intended destination. Record the interval and inspect the resulting region and input identity. Replay the start and end, then retain and name the first take. Record the second take onto a new track. Keep the first take so you can compare them.

Evidence to keep

Demonstrate the operation yourself where equipment is available. Identify the controls used and verify the result; keep proposed operations separate from completed demonstrations.

5. Overdub with a deliberate listening plan

1.1.d · ISTE Standards for Students
Operate and explain technology

Assignment

Add a supplied bus part or a new performance alongside the foundation. Confirm only the intended new destination is armed. Replay the combined result and record one musical observation. Plan a punch interval with lead-in and lead-out; perform it only after verifying the available controls and preserving the original.

Evidence to keep

Demonstrate the operation yourself where equipment is available. Identify the controls used and verify the result; keep proposed operations separate from completed demonstrations.

6. Bounce deliberately and preserve options

9.1 · Tennessee A/V Production I — C11H01
Organize and preserve session files

Assignment

Plan a submix from two or more parts and list the decisions it would commit. Save a checkpoint and identify which independent sources will remain. If rendering the submix, verify its route and range, then compare it with the original combination. Document whether processing and tails are included.

Evidence to keep

List the working files and their purposes. Reopen the saved or transferred copy and record the playback result.

7. Edit the sound, not just the grid

9.2 · Tennessee A/V Production I — C11H01
Edit audio in software

Assignment

Choose one boundary with audible material on both sides. Save the original and make a small reversible edit. Compare the join in isolation and in the full phrase. Record one rejected edit and identify how to restore the original.

Evidence to keep

Keep the original and edited versions. Identify the changed passage and audition its entrance, join and ending.

8. Organize, reopen and hand off the session

9.1 · Tennessee A/V Production I — C11H01
Organize and preserve session files

Assignment

Save and reopen the project; verify track names, regions, inputs and source availability. Replay the foundation and added layer. Keep a reference export plus take/track/edit notes. Submit the session, reference mix, and recording notes. Identify any work still needed before delivery.

Evidence to keep

List the working files and their purposes. Reopen the saved or transferred copy and record the playback result.

Assessment criteria

Teacher assessment guide

Assess the work named in each row. Record the file or portfolio entry, the criterion, the result and the next action. Use a practical observation for equipment operation. Give feedback on the learner’s decisions as well as the finished result.

ScoreEvidence
3Criterion met, with independent verification or a successful application in another situation.
2Criterion met: the required work is complete, accurate and supported by evidence.
1Some relevant work is present, but the intended result has not been demonstrated.
0The required evidence has not been submitted or demonstrated.

Record each criterion and the next action. Practical equipment work needs an observed demonstration. Use the course grading plan for the final result.

Self-guided completion

Read the evidence requirement before starting. Save the work, check each criterion and revise any missing or unsuccessful part. Use a peer or instructor for tasks that require feedback or a witnessed practical demonstration.

Teaching practice

2.5.b · ISTE Standards for Educators
Design a practical technology lesson

Prepare and teach “1. Plan the performance and track layout.” Demonstrate the task, then have learners complete it independently.

Submit: A teaching plan, demonstration or teach-back, and learner work showing the result.

Assess: State the learning objective, teach a workable activity and show how the resulting student work demonstrates the objective.

2.5.a · ISTE Standards for Educators
Adapt a lesson for learner needs

Adapt one practical assignment for a learner with limited equipment, a different way of accessing instructions, or a different way of presenting the result.

Submit: The original task, the adapted route and the shared assessment criteria.

Assess: Name a specific access or learning need and provide a usable alternative that preserves the intended skill.

2.7.c · ISTE Standards for Educators
Use assessment to guide teaching

Use “8. Organize, reopen and hand off the session” to assess the learner’s decisions and finished work. Plan feedback and a second attempt for one unmet criterion.

Submit: An annotated rubric, specific feedback, revised work and a brief comparison.

Assess: Score the work against stated criteria, identify the misconception and provide feedback and a suitable next activity.
