Suggested learner fit
For educators, not a student course.
Priority skills: Demonstrating and assessing fair a/b listening; describing timbre, level, space, and uncertainty; testing a claim.
Prior skills: Read or complete the companion student course; bring a sample assignment to assess.
Equipment: Headphones or speakers, supplied listening files, and a place to record observations.
Expected time: 6 designed hours
Teacher guidance: No instructor is required; this edition is for educators preparing to demonstrate, assess, and adapt the student course.

Work to do
Prepare: The first teaching task is making comparisons trustworthy. Preview every file on the classroom system, verify left/right channels, disable optional spatial enhancement where possible and record any processing that cannot be disabled. For a level exercise, preserve the encoded level difference. For a tonal comparison, use the aligned versions and discuss remaining perceptual differences.
Demonstrate: Say: “We are comparing a change, not testing who has the best ears.” Play Pair 01. Ask for a description before a preference. Play Pair 02 and accept uncertainty. Ask which variables were fixed.
Rehearse and teach back: Create a playback/setup checklist for the actual room. Teach the five-minute comparison to a colleague or small group; collect one concrete point of confusion.
Assess this case: Case: Jo reports no difference on an unchanged pair. Sam confidently invents an EQ explanation. The teacher gives Sam more credit for technical vocabulary.
Assignment
Prepare and teach the demonstration for prepare a reliable listening classroom. Use the named practical and classroom case below. Record what the learner actually did, score the case against the course criteria, and revise the teaching after feedback.
Evidence to keep
Keep the prepared example and baseline, the changed or reopened result, a teach-back record, criterion-level case score, feedback, revised plan and access adaptation. Label simulated or untested practical work honestly.
Assessment criteria
Creates a repeatable classroom comparison
Establishes appropriate playback and access arrangements
Demonstrates observation before preference
Revises teaching from specific feedback
Standard-specific check: State the learning objective, teach a workable activity and show how the resulting student work demonstrates the objective.

Work to do
Prepare: Teach everyday description before precise labels. A listener can hear a difference without knowing its name. Use synthesized tones to isolate one factor, then transfer to speech or music. The missing-fundamental example teaches the difference between physical components and perceived pitch.
Demonstrate: Play Tone A and B: “What changed in character? Is that necessarily a different note?” Display the component chart and name timbre. Compare Tone C to change the pitch variable.
Rehearse and teach back: Prepare a vocabulary card with six everyday terms linked to cautious technical descriptions. Teach the sound-map task using three references, then ask a partner to bracket an unknown.
Assess this case: Case: Lee says “B is buzzier, but I think the note stays similar.” Ari says “B is 440 Hz because bright sounds are high notes.” Both heard Tone A/B. Score the reasoning.

2.7.c · ISTE Standards for Educators Use assessment to guide teaching
Implementation · Learning Forward Standards for Professional Learning Improve teaching through practice
Work to do
Prepare: Teach high-pass and low-pass by what passes, then connect the name to what is reduced. Real filters have slopes; avoid diagrams that imply every ordinary filter is a perfect wall. For tonal judgments, compare the same source and check level alignment. A processed file that is louder may win a preference vote for the wrong reason.
Demonstrate: Play Filter A and B: “Which region is reduced? What does the name tell us passes?” Compare Bright A with the reference, then Bright B. Invite a revised preference.
Rehearse and teach back: Prepare a demonstration in the school’s DAW or using the supplied variants. Give a five-minute teach-back distinguishing a filter from a bell adjustment.
Assess this case: Case: A learner boosts several bands and increases output gain, then writes “more professional.” The teacher accepts it because classmates prefer it. What evidence is missing?

2.7.c · ISTE Standards for Educators Use assessment to guide teaching
Implementation · Learning Forward Standards for Professional Learning Improve teaching through practice
Work to do
Prepare: Masking is not deletion. Establish the target alone, then combine it with a competitor while keeping the target fixed. Noise is contextual: wanted rain in a soundscape differs from unwanted rain in a dialogue recording. Encourage description of continuous/tonal/intermittent patterns before assigning cause.
Demonstrate: Play voice alone and combined: “Is the voice absent, or harder to follow?” Lower only the backing and ask for both benefit and musical cost.
Rehearse and teach back: Facilitate the lesson 13 masking experiment and one lesson 14 intervention comparison. Prepare a noise-description card with safe next tests.
Assess this case: Case: Fin raises the whole combined recording and says the voice-to-backing balance is fixed. Ren lowers only the backing and describes a clearer phrase but less musical energy. Compare their evidence.

2.7.c · ISTE Standards for Educators Use assessment to guide teaching

Work to do
Prepare: Distance experiments require two views. Raw files retain level changes; aligned copies support attention to room and timbre. Short delayed copies can color sound; longer ones can be perceived as repeats. Source and relative level matter, so no universal delay boundary should be required.
Demonstrate: Play the distance excerpt and name its performance limitation before drawing conclusions. Compare dry and delayed pulses; ask for descriptions before revealing delay values.
Rehearse and teach back: Plan a controlled voice-distance comparison and a no-recording alternative. Teach a spatial-listening mini-lesson, allowing diagram-based explanation.
Assess this case: Case: A teacher normalizes all distance files, then uses their similar level to prove distance has no effect. A student hears the binaural voice inside the head and is marked wrong. Correct both judgments.

Work to do
Prepare: Completion requires inspectable evidence, not audio-play time. The platform uses four 0–3 criteria for ordinary lessons, each requiring 2. Calibrate with examples before assessing students. A polished explanation without a repeatable comparison is incomplete.
Demonstrate: Display the four criteria and score a deliberately incomplete response aloud. Show how feedback names the missing evidence and a feasible next attempt.
Rehearse and teach back: Score the three calibration responses in the facilitator worksheet and explain each criterion. Submit a school-specific launch plan with schedule, equipment, access routes, media preflight and review responsibilities.
Assess this case: Case A: “I prefer B; it sounds professional.” Case B: “Same phrase and playback; reducing the backing made the last words clearer but weakened the music; I kept a smaller reduction after feedback.” Case C: “The display proves every listener hears 200 Hz.” Explain your next teaching action for each.

Teacher assessment guide
Assess the work named in each row. Record the file or portfolio entry, the criterion, the result and the next action. Use a practical observation for equipment operation. Give feedback on the learner’s decisions as well as the finished result.
Score
Evidence
3
Criterion met, with independent verification or a successful application in another situation.
2
Criterion met: the required work is complete, accurate and supported by evidence.
1
Some relevant work is present, but the intended result has not been demonstrated.
0
The required evidence has not been submitted or demonstrated.
Record each criterion and the next action. Practical equipment work needs an observed demonstration. Use the course grading plan for the final result.
Self-guided completion
Read the evidence requirement before starting. Save the work, check each criterion and revise any missing or unsuccessful part. Use a peer or instructor for tasks that require feedback or a witnessed practical demonstration.
